How to Workout When You’re Busy

Summer is full of fun, but it’s also a busy time for many people! Between graduations, weddings, kids’ activities, yard work and vacations; a workout may get pushed to the bottom of the priority list. Staying consistent with intentional exercise is valuable. That’s why I’d like to share a few tips for making your workouts happen even when you are busy.

Squeeze in a mini workout.

Maybe you don’t have a solid hour to devote to a workout, but you have a half hour here and 20 minutes there. Take advantage of whatever time you have. Go for a walk for a little bit and then the next available time do a few body-weight exercises in your living room. Here’s a sample body-weight circuit workout that takes less than 15 minutes: Perform 10 push-ups, 20 jumping jacks, 10 squats, 10 tricep dips (using a chair) and 10 lunges. Then jog in place or perform high knees for 30 seconds. Repeat this circuit 3 to 5 times resting 1 minute between rounds and as needed between exercises.

Make it a priority.

Your health matters. You can’t pour form an empty cup. If you know that you have a full day ahead, consider waking up 30 minutes earlier than usual so you can get in a workout. If you have a bunch of things to do and places to go, working out first helps so that it won’t be hanging over your head and you won’t put it off until later. “Later” usually never happens.

Get others involved.

Bring your kids, family or a friend to do something active! Having lunch with a friend? Go for a walk after. Enjoy an evening bike ride with the family after supper. Take your kids to the park and play active games together such as tag, red light green light or hot lava. Make the most of the beautiful weather and teach your kids to enjoy doing physical activity.

Find some accountability.

Finally, consider an accountability partner such as a personal trainer or friend. It’s best to have an appointment, whether meeting with a friend every Tuesday and Friday at 9 in the morning for a walk or gym session or meeting a trainer. That way, you are more likely to make it to the gym because it’s on your calendar. I have heard numerous times from my clients that if your workout wasn’t on their calendar, they wouldn’t have gone to the gym. But they’re always glad after they complete it!

I would recommend aiming for 3 or more days of activity per week, 30 to 60 minutes per day. Some days may be more or less, but remember you can always squeeze in a little here and there.

The bottom line is that life is always going to seem busy. Whether you’re a parent to 3 young kids, an empty-nester, a business owner or retired, your calendar is going to get full and you’ll be pulled in a lot of different directions. Being healthy so you can enjoy life is your most important resource. You’ll be able do rise up to the challenge of whatever life throws at you better with stronger muscles and bones along with a healthier mind and perspective. Exercise will help you feel accomplished, confident, energetic and happier.
